A Century History, A Century Nursing. West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University, founded in 1915, is one of China’s earliest institutions to establish and provide higher education in nursing. Our nursing program is one of the only two nursing programs included in China’s “Double First-Class Initiative”. Our school is one of the first group of academic institutions authorized to offer doctoral degree program, a post-doctoral research station, and a first-class undergraduate course construction station. Since our nursing program was included in the “Double First-Class Initiative”, we have made remarkable achievements to develop it into a world-class program.
West China School of Nursing was approved by China’s Ministry of Education as one of the first group of National First-Class Undergraduate Course Construction Stations in 2019. Our nursing program ranked the first in China’s “Science and Technology Evaluation Metrics” for 4 consecutive years. Moreover, our nursing program also ranked the first in the Best Chinese Subjects Rankings by Shanghai Ranking in 2020. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, our nursing program entered the world’s Top 150.
Perfect the teaching system and make breakthroughs in teaching reform
West China School of Nursing has established a lifelong education system covering “degree education, post-graduation education and continuing education”, and has cultivated a large number of excellent nursing talents. Specifically, our school has produced more than 10,000 graduates from bachelor/master/doctor programs and incubated postdoctoral fellows for both China and Pakistan. We have established the Disaster Nursing Program in China and a system for training master-doctoral-postdoctoral disaster nursing talents, leading high-level talent training in the field of disaster nursing in China. Under the school leadership, we started with the teaching reform characterized by “inquiry-based classroom teaching and small class teaching”，and conscientiously carried out Sichuan University’s practice of first-class undergraduate education through “all-element classroom teaching reform, non-standardized academic evaluation in the whole process, promotion of personalized training by all methods, strengthening teaching and education among all faculty members， and increasing teaching input in an all-round way”. As one of the main contributing programs, our nursing program won the first provincial and ministerial Teaching Achievement Award. Our program entitled “Sichuan University’s Practice of First-Class Undergraduate Education Taking Classroom Teaching Reform as a Breakthrough” won the special award of National Teaching Achievement. Our students have won many honors such as “Chinese University Students of the Year” and “Gold Award of China’s ‘Internet Plus’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.

Fostewr virtue and culture through education. Strengthen ideological and political education for program develop ment
Relying on the advantages of “a profound party culture and long history of Sichuan University and West China School of Nursing”, we have been actively exploring innovative measures for ideological and political education. We have established a distinctive system composed of “ideological and political courses + integration of ideological and political education elements in professional courses”. We have included “Red Culture of alumna Sister Jiang - History of Sichuan University - History of West China School of Nursing” in the first general education course for freshmen. We organized the “Ideological and Political Class: Lighting the Way to the Fight Against the COVID-19 Pandemic” and set up an ideological and political course team composed of the winners of the Nightingale Medal, famous ideological and political teachers at the School of Marxism, professional full-time ideological and political teachers， as well as models of the nursing profession. Through in-depth exploration of the ideological, political and moral elements of the nursing program, we have established a “Nursing Ideological and Political Education Database” that is both “practical” and “reflects the current affairs”. In this way, we realized the organic integration of ideological and political education with professional knowledge， and delivered the last mile of the “cultivation of people by all staff, throughout the whole process, and in an all-round manner”. Besides, we have been strengthening the education of freshmen to love the school and the university and have achieved the full coverage of ideological and political education in all professional courses. Our ideological and political program has been awarded a “Demonstrative Program of Ideological and Political Education in Sichuan Province”, and the program course has been awarded a “Demonstrative Course of Ideological and Political Education in Sichuan Province”.

Push forward scientific research and education, and enhance the capacity for technological innovation in nursing
Over the past five years, the funds for the provincial and ministerial research projects presided over by post-doctors and graduate students of our school have exceeded RMB 4 million. We have published papers in renowned international journals such as JAMA Internal Medicine and the International Journal of Nursing Studies with the highest impact factor reaching 20.768. Besides, we have also been awarded several national invention patents.

Build an academic platform and gather international resources
Our School has established long-term partnerships with prestigious international institutions and universities such as Mayo Medical School and Oxford University. Relying on the University of Washington and other famous universities, we have established the West China Overseas Center integrating medicine, teaching and research to provide an overseas basis for graduate education. We have been vigorously implementing projects such as the “Short-Term Oversea Study Project for Postgraduates at Sichuan University” and the “Dachuan Vision” student oversea visit program and have provided scholarships and grants to each postgraduate for their overseas exchange or study. Several postgraduate students were awarded scholarships by China Scholarship Council, and they went to study in the collaborative programs or engage in postdoctoral research at such famous universities as McMaster University in Canada and Washington University in the United States. More than 100 graduate students made oral presentations at international conferences. Besides, our students won the Best Speaker Award and Excellent Wall Newspaper Award at the 21st East Asian Forum of Nursing Scholars.

Strive to educate students through practice and improve students’ overall quality
Our nursing program adheres to the principle of “fostering virtue through education” and encourages scientific and technological innovation to cultivate outstanding nursing talents characterized by all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetic sense and service attitude. We have made remarkable achievements in implementing the Five Ways of Life. Our students have won several education achievements, such as the “National Scholarship”, “Class A Certificate of Comprehensive Quality of College Students in Sichuan Province”, “Outstanding Graduates of Sichuan Province”, “Champion of the Chinese University Basketball League (Sichuan Area)”, Award of the University Sports Dance Competition as well as College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Plan. Moreover, our students won the “Gold Award of China’s ‘Internet Plus’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the grand prize and first prize of the China Graduate Contest on Smart-City Technology and Creative Design, as well as the second prize of the National Aerospace Model Open Competition.

The nursing program of Sichuan University has been developing rapidly in recent years. It has gradually developed into a superior discipline with “Chinese characteristics, Sichuan University style, and the West China School of Nursing brand” in the course of cultural inheritance and innovation as well as program development. Focusing on program development, West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University is committed to cultural progress, nursing education, nursing research, supporting platforms, international cooperation and social reputation. Up to now, we have established a framework for cultivating high-caliber talents with the strong support of 4 hospitals and 15 teaching and research sections; created a program construction framework comprising the head nurses of departments, the head nurses of specialties， and the deputy head nurses of specialties; and fostered a new force for the development of nursing through integration, innovation and inheritance. In the new era, West China School of Nursing is embracing the major mission of nursing program development with the fullest enthusiasm and the greatest tolerance.
