On September 25, 2020, at the 124th anniversary of Sichuan University, the 110th anniversary of West China Center of Medical Sciences, and the 105th anniversary of West China School of Nursing, the Forum of Nursing Discipline Development & the First Nursing Alumni Conference of West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University was successfully held in Chengdu, the Land of Abundance.
The conference was held by West China School of Nursing. It invited 59 well-known nursing experts from 36 nursing colleges from home and abroad, and more than 300 alumni to participate. Apart from that, more than 500 and 5400 people attended the conference offline and online respectively. The conference began with an impressive video introduction with the themes of “Unfading, Spreading, Cultivating, Integrating”.
On behalf of the Sichuan University, Prof. Zhang Lin, Vice President of Sichuan University & Director of West China Medical Center, made a welcome speech. He pointed out that the nursing discipline of Sichuan University has developed rapidly in recent years and has gradually become an advanced discipline with "Chinese characteristics, Sichuan University style, West China brand" in the development of cultural inheritance and innovation. He highlighted that nursing should take the initiative to serve the major needs of the country, adhere to the characteristics of "integration of doctors and nurses", further refine the discipline direction and strengthen the development of discipline connotation, constantly gather outstanding talents, strive to produce important typical results, and make bigger contribution to build a first-class nursing discipline and protect people's health. He hoped that this event can better gather the wisdom of all parties to promote the development of nursing career and nursing discipline.
Prof. Li Weimin, Dean of West China School of Medicine/School of Nursing & President of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, made a welcome speech for all the attending guests, experts and alumni. He said that the West China School of Nursing, holding the spirit of loyalty, persistence, simplicity and dedication, has trained countless outstanding nursing leaders, and achieved good results in nursing education, scientific research and international cooperation. Especially during the pandemic of the COVID-19, West China School of Nursing has contributed strength in areas of medical care, education, research to the battle against the pandemic. He emphasized the opportunities and challenges are coexisted for today's nursing discipline, and hoped that all nursing colleagues can work together to overcome difficulties and jointly promote the development of nursing discipline in China. He expressed his best wishes to Chinese nursing discipline to become world first-class soon.
Yang Jing, Deputy editor-in-chief of People’s Medical Publishing House, said that 2020 is an uncommon year. Huaxi medical and nursing team always stand in the first-line of each disaster rescue and prevention, and has handed in a satisfactory achievement for the country and the people. The advanced education system, staff level and knowledge structure of West China School of Nursing are excellent among nursing colleges. He promoted the academic exchange with nursing colleagues, the collision of ideas and the stimulation of the spark of wisdom, which would bring nursing education to a higher level.
Wang Qiang, Director of Standards Management Division of Medical Management Service Guidance Center of National Health Commission, pointed out that in recent years, through continuous development and innovation, nursing had created a new situation and made remarkable achievements in the aspects of quality improvement, management system innovation, operation mechanism transformation, service mode change, and integration with the development of modern medicine. We should take advantage of the favorable opportunity of national promotion the development of nursing care, to speed up the healthy development of nursing care, strive for the early realization of “everyone has access to basic medical and health service”, and help the construction and realization of "Healthy China Dream ".
Prof. Wu Xinjuan, Chair of Chinese Nursing Association, gave us a speech online. She first affirmed the important position of West China School of Nursing in Chinese nursing discipline, and emphasized that alumni of West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University were very valuable talent resources in China and the world. She expected that West China School of Nursing could innovate and develop based on the present situation, further promote and implement the nursing service to accurately connect with the needs of people's health, and add a strong stroke to the grand blueprint for the construction of "Healthy China".
Prof. Shang Shaomei, Chairman of Teaching Advisory Committee on Nursing Higher Education, Ministry of Education, and Dean of School of Nursing, Peking University, first reviewed the historical developments of nursing discipline. Then she put forward that with the increasingly cross-infiltration of medical science and technology, nursing discipline has presented a comprehensive development trend. She hoped that future nursing education will promote the cultivation of innovative talents by scientific research, improve the teaching level in the process of scientific research, develop to a high level and diversified directions, and continuously inject new vitality into the health service.
Prof. Yin Lei, Honorary Consultant of Alumni Association of West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University & President of Macao Nursing Education Association, reviewed the history of West China School of Nursing, described the deep relationship with her alma mater, and deeply expressed her feelings to the development of West China School of Nursing. She said that she felt deeply honored and proud as one of Huaxi people. She thanked the School for cultivating students and benefiting people, and expressed her best wishes to its vigorous development.
The opening ceremony was hosted by Prof. Lin Yunfeng, Vice Director of West China Medical Center, and Prof. Li Ka, Executive Dean of West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University.

The conference was divided into four chapters: “Unfading, Spreading, Cultivating, Integrating”. The first three chapters were presented in the form of artistic live show, which combined students' personal growth, the school's "double first-class" construction and development, and the realization of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation together.
The musical "Lantern Taker" showed a brilliant story across generations of Huaxi nurses, represented by Lu Yijia, Cheng Yijuan, Li Jiping, Luo Biru and Tian Yongming, who laid the foundation of discipline development, worked hard and wrote new chapters of nursing.
"Ginkgo Flowers Perfume in the Spring" presented a story from students of West China School of Nursing, who inherit the hope of nursing with love, knowledge, wisdom and courage.
“Interview” invited alumni representatives, like Jiang Yan, Gao Jing, Han Lin, Xiao Dongxia, Liu Ya, to share their experiences of becoming leaders in nursing education, building the peak of nursing discipline in western China, moving from West China to the world and battles against COVID-19.
"So I Want You to Stay" illustrated the Huaxi spirit through the song played by nursing students.
"A Medical Worker's Diary" recorded the moving moments in daily life of medical workers, presented a variety of emotions, and reflected the adherence and sense of duty of nurses
The first three chapters were successfully ended in reciting the Hippocratic Oath by all the performers.
The conference focused on discipline construction, nursing education, scientific research, talent training, clinical service, humanistic nursing, professional development, nursing management and other hot topics among nursing discipline, which were presented in the form of thematic speeches and summit forums. The conference invited top speakers to share tremendous theme reports, which exhibited internationalization, innovation, talent-gathering.
