Recently, Dr. Neil h. Winawer, editor-in-chief of NEJM Journal Watch, commented on the original work“Effect of the tailored, family-involved hospital elder life program on postoperative delirium and function in older adults: A randomized clinical trial”,published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The first author of this paper is Yanyan Wang, a post-doctoral research fellow at School of Nursing, and the corresponding author isProfessorJirong Yueat the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatrics.
In this review, Dr. Neil h. Winawer reaffirmed the value of integrating family members or family paid caregivers into personalized hospitalized elderly living program (t-HELP), making it a comprehensive intervention model for the prevention of postoperative delirium. In contrast to the original inpatient elderly living program (HELP) model, which requires more resources such as volunteers in some delirium prevention, the improve t-HELP appears to be more cost-effective.
